Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Ride-on Roller training

How long does the CPCS A31 course take?

Complete beginners: 3 days

Experienced operators: 2 days + assessment

Experienced Worker Test: 1 day (test only). If you're unsure which applies, we offer a free practical assessment to advise the best route.

Do I need experience to attend?

No. Complete beginners are welcome on the 3-day course. If you've got experience, we can shorten the training (2 days) or advise whether you're ready for the Experienced Worker Test.

What's the difference between static and vibratory compaction?

Static compaction: Compaction by weight alone, suitable for thin lifts, finishing layers, and delicate surfaces (asphalt top coat)

Vibratory compaction: Weight + vibration frequency for deeper compaction, faster work, better for granular materials and thicker lifts

Most modern rollers have selectable vibration (on/off). Your A31 training covers when to use each method and why it matters.

Can I use my Red Card to work on site immediately?

Yes. The CPCS Red Card is valid for site work as soon as you receive it. It's recognised across UK construction and civil engineering sites.

However, you must upgrade to Blue Card (via NVQ Level 2) within the two-year validity period.

How do I upgrade from Red Card to Blue Card?

You need to complete NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations while working on site. This typically takes 6-12 months and is assessed based on your real-world competence, not another exam.

The process:

  1. Pass A31 and get Red Card (valid 2 years)
  2. Work on site, logging hours and building portfolio
  3. Complete NVQ Level 2 with assessor (6-12 months)
  4. Apply to CPCS for Blue Card (valid 5 years, renewable)

We can connect you to NVQ providers and help you explore funding options (CITB grants, Apprenticeship Levy, etc.).

What is the Experienced Worker Test and do I qualify?

The EWT is a one-day test-only route for people with significant recent experience on ride-on rollers. You need to be confident you can pass both theory and practical tests without training.

Be realistic: If you're borderline, it's smarter to do 2 days of training and go in prepared. Fail the EWT and you'll have to start over with full training.

We offer a free practical assessment to help you decide if you're EWT-ready.

What types of rollers does A31 cover?

A31 covers ride-on compaction rollers, including:

  • Smooth drum rollers: Single or double drum, for asphalt and granular materials
  • Padfoot/sheepsfoot rollers: For cohesive soils and clay
  • Grid rollers: For rock fill and large aggregate
  • Combination rollers: Smooth drum + pneumatic tyres

Training covers principles applicable to all ride-on roller types. The A31 card is valid for all variants.

What happens if I fail the test?

First, we'll debrief you on what went wrong. Then we'll discuss the best way to get you retested—whether that's more practice, another day of training, or just booking a retest.

Common issues are poor compaction patterns, incorrect vibration use, and inadequate pre-use checks. Failing isn't the end of the world, but it's better to go in properly prepared first time.

Can I use my A31 card for pedestrian rollers?

No. A31 covers ride-on rollers only. Pedestrian (walk-behind) rollers typically don't require CPCS certification but may need manufacturer-specific training or site induction.

Some sites may accept A31 as evidence of compaction knowledge, but it's not formally required for pedestrian rollers.

How many passes do I need to make with a roller?

This depends on:

  • Material type (asphalt, soil, aggregate)
  • Lift thickness (depth of material layer)
  • Roller weight and vibration frequency
  • Specification requirements (usually 4-8 passes for most work)

Over-rolling can damage hot asphalt; under-rolling fails to achieve density. You'll learn how to judge compaction quality and adjust pass counts during training.

Can I operate rollers on steep slopes?

Rollers can work on gradients, but with restrictions:

  • Operate up and down the slope, never across
  • Check manufacturer's maximum gradient (typically 20-30%)
  • Use low gear and controlled speed
  • Be aware of reduced stability and braking ability

Slope work requires extra caution—rollers can tip or slide on steep, unstable, or wet surfaces. This is covered in training.

What happens if I hit a buried service whilst rolling?

Stop immediately and report to the site supervisor. Rollers can cause serious damage to buried utilities (gas, electric, water, telecoms).

Prevention:

  • Check drawings and utility plans before starting
  • Use Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT) to locate services
  • Mark out exclusion zones
  • Reduce vibration or use static mode over services

Hitting a gas or electric line can be fatal. Training covers utility awareness and safe working procedures.

What materials can I compact with a ride-on roller?

Depending on drum type:

  • Smooth drums: Asphalt, bitumen surfaces, fine soils, granular sub-base
  • Padfoot drums: Cohesive soils (clay, silt), sub-base layers
  • Grid rollers: Rock fill, large aggregate, hardcore
  • Pneumatic tyres: Asphalt finishing, uniform surface compaction

Choosing the wrong roller for the material can damage the surface or fail to achieve compaction. This is covered in training.

How long is the CPCS Red Card valid?

Two years. Within that time, you need to complete your NVQ Level 2 and upgrade to a Blue Card. If you don't, your Red Card expires and you'll need to retest.

Can I get funding or finance for the course?

Funding options depend on your employment status:

  • Employers: CITB grants may be available (if levy-paying), or use Apprenticeship Levy for NVQ costs
  • Self-employed: Typically self-funded, but it's an investment in your qualification and earning potential

We can discuss options when you enquire. For NVQ costs specifically, there's often more funding available—talk to us about connecting with providers.

What is the instructor-to-learner ratio?

Maximum 2:1, and we often run 1:1 where possible. That means you're not sharing an instructor with a big group—you get proper supervision and plenty of time operating the roller.
