What You'll Learn

This isn't vague promises—here's what actually happens during your training, broken down by theory and practical components.

Theory (Classroom)

  • Work at Height Regulations 2005—what you need to know
  • Pre-use checks and daily inspections for scissor lifts
  • Machine capabilities: height limits, platform capacity, gradient restrictions
  • Hazard awareness: overhead cables, ground conditions, weather limits
  • Guardrail systems and fall protection requirements
  • Emergency lowering procedures and descent systems

Practical (Hands-On)

  • Machine familiarisation: platform controls, drive systems, emergency stops
  • Pre-use inspections: batteries, hydraulics, guardrails, safety systems
  • Raising and lowering procedures—smooth, controlled operation
  • Driving whilst elevated: when it's safe and when it's prohibited
  • Positioning for work access whilst avoiding overhead hazards
  • Emergency lowering: manual descent procedures if power fails
  • Ground conditions assessment: slopes, soft surfaces, potholes
  • End-of-shift routines: securing the platform, shutdown procedures

A25 Course Scope

  • Training on electric and diesel scissor lifts (typically 4-12 metre models)
  • Modern, well-maintained MEWP equipment from our own fleet (not hired-in)
  • Vertical rise only—different from boom lifts which reach up-and-over
  • Guardrail systems provide fall protection (harness not typically required)
  • Driving whilst elevated: permitted on most models with restrictions
  • Indoor and outdoor applications: construction sites, warehouses, maintenance work
  • A25: Scissor lifts only (vertical platforms)
  • A26: Boom lifts (articulating/telescopic—separate qualification)

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about MEWP Scissor Lift training

How long does the CPCS A25 course take?

Complete beginners: 3 days (full training)

Some experience: 2 days + assessment

Experienced Worker Test: 1 day (test only). If you're unsure which applies, we offer a free practical assessment to advise the best route.

Do I need experience to attend?

No. Complete beginners are welcome on the 3-day course. If you've got regular scissor lift experience, we can shorten the training (2 days) or advise whether you're ready for the Experienced Worker Test.

What's the difference between scissor lifts and boom lifts?

A25 Scissor Lifts: Vertical rise only, more stable platform, better for indoor work, can often drive whilst elevated. Guardrail protection usually sufficient (harness not typically required).

A26 Boom Lifts: Up-and-over reach, outdoor terrain capability, more complex controls, cannot typically drive when extended. Harness mandatory.

Many operators hold both cards for maximum flexibility. Scissor lifts are simpler to learn and operate.

Can I use my Red Card to work on site immediately?

Yes. The CPCS Red Card is valid for site work as soon as you receive it. It's recognised across UK construction, maintenance, and installation sites.

However, you must upgrade to Blue Card (via NVQ Level 2) within the two-year validity period.

How do I upgrade from Red Card to Blue Card?

You need to complete NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations (MEWP) while working on site. This typically takes 6-12 months and is assessed based on your real-world competence, not another exam.

The process:

  1. Pass A25 and get Red Card (valid 2 years)
  2. Work on site, logging hours operating scissor lifts and building portfolio
  3. Complete NVQ Level 2 with assessor (6-12 months)
  4. Apply to CPCS for Blue Card (valid 5 years, renewable)

We can connect you to NVQ providers and help you explore funding options (CITB grants, Apprenticeship Levy, etc.).

What is the Experienced Worker Test and do I qualify?

The EWT is a one-day test-only route for people with significant recent experience on scissor lifts. You need to be confident you can pass both theory and practical tests without training.

Be realistic: If you're borderline, it's smarter to do 2 days of training and go in prepared. Fail the EWT and you'll have to start over with full training.

We offer a free practical assessment to help you decide if you're EWT-ready.

Do I need a harness on a scissor lift?

Generally no for standard scissor lifts with full guardrails and self-closing gates. The guardrail system provides fall protection.

However, harnesses are required if:

  • Working on boom lifts (A26—harness mandatory)
  • Any modifications to guardrails or gates
  • Specific site rules require them
  • Risk assessment identifies additional fall hazards

Always follow manufacturer guidance and site-specific requirements.

What happens if I fail the test?

First, we'll debrief you on what went wrong—whether it's control technique, safety awareness, or emergency procedures. Then we'll discuss the best way to get you retested.

This might involve more platform time, another day of training, or just booking a retest. Failing isn't the end of the world, but it's better to go in properly prepared first time.

Can I drive the scissor lift whilst elevated?

This depends on the specific model and manufacturer guidelines. Many electric scissor lifts allow controlled driving whilst elevated, but with strict speed and terrain restrictions.

You'll learn the specific rules during training, including gradient limits, surface requirements, and when driving elevated is prohibited for safety.

How long is the CPCS Red Card valid?

Two years. Within that time, you need to complete your NVQ Level 2 and upgrade to a Blue Card. If you don't, your Red Card expires and you'll need to retest.

Can I get funding or finance for the course?

Funding options depend on your employment status:

  • Employers: CITB grants may be available (if levy-paying), or use Apprenticeship Levy for NVQ costs
  • Self-employed: Typically self-funded, but it's an investment in your qualification and site access

We can discuss options when you enquire. For NVQ costs specifically, there's often more funding available—talk to us about connecting with providers.

What is the instructor-to-learner ratio?

Maximum 2:1. That means you're not sharing an instructor with a big group—you get proper supervision and plenty of platform time to build confidence at height.

What weather conditions prevent scissor lift operation?

Do not operate in:

  • High winds: Typically above 12.5 m/s (28 mph), but check manufacturer limits
  • Ice/snow: Slip hazards for the base and platform
  • Heavy rain: Reduced visibility and electrical risks
  • Lightning: Elevated platforms increase strike risk

Always check the machine's operating manual for specific wind speed and weather limits.

Are electric or diesel scissor lifts better?

Electric scissor lifts: Ideal for indoor use (no emissions), quieter, smoother operation, lower running costs, suitable for smooth/flat surfaces.

Diesel/hybrid scissor lifts: Better for outdoor/rough terrain, more power, works in all weather, higher ground clearance.

Your A25 training covers both types. The choice depends on your working environment—most indoor sites require electric, outdoor sites often use diesel.

Can I use my A25 card for boom lifts as well?

No. A25 covers scissor lifts only (vertical platforms). Boom lifts require a separate A26 MEWP Boom qualification.

The controls, stability, and operation principles are different enough to require separate certification. Many sites require both, and operators often hold dual qualifications.

What industries employ scissor lift operators?

Scissor lift operators work across numerous sectors:

  • Construction: Installation work, finishing trades, overhead access
  • Maintenance: Building services, lighting, HVAC systems
  • Warehousing: High-level inventory access, racking maintenance
  • Events/Retail: Display installation, signage, overhead rigging
  • Facilities management: Building maintenance and repair work

Working at height qualifications are essential across almost every construction and maintenance sector.
