Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Skid Steer Loader training

How long does the CPCS A23 course take?

Complete beginners: 3 days (full training)

Some experience: 2 days + assessment

Experienced Worker Test: 1 day (test only). If you're unsure which applies, we offer a free practical assessment to advise the best route.

Do I need experience to attend?

No. Complete beginners are welcome on the 3-day course. If you've got regular skid steer experience, we can shorten the training (2 days) or advise whether you're ready for the Experienced Worker Test.

What makes skid steers different from other loaders?

Skid steers use differential drive—left and right wheels are controlled independently, not with a steering wheel. This means:

  • Zero-radius turning: Machine can spin on the spot by counter-rotating wheels
  • Compact size: Fits through doorways (typically 6ft wide) where larger loaders can't go
  • Quick-attach system: Change attachments in minutes—buckets, forks, breakers, sweepers, augers
  • Versatility: One machine can load, lift, dig, sweep, and drill with different attachments

This combination of size, manoeuvrability, and versatility makes them indispensable on construction and landscaping sites.

Can I use my Red Card to work on site immediately?

Yes. The CPCS Red Card is valid for site work as soon as you receive it. It's recognised across UK construction, groundworks, and landscaping sites.

However, you must upgrade to Blue Card (via NVQ Level 2) within the two-year validity period.

How do I upgrade from Red Card to Blue Card?

You need to complete NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations while working on site. This typically takes 6-12 months and is assessed based on your real-world competence, not another exam.

The process:

  1. Pass A23 and get Red Card (valid 2 years)
  2. Work on site, logging hours operating skid steers and building portfolio
  3. Complete NVQ Level 2 with assessor (6-12 months)
  4. Apply to CPCS for Blue Card (valid 5 years, renewable)

We can connect you to NVQ providers and help you explore funding options (CITB grants, Apprenticeship Levy, etc.).

What is the Experienced Worker Test and do I qualify?

The EWT is a one-day test-only route for people with significant recent experience on skid steer loaders. You need to be confident you can pass both theory and practical tests without training.

Be realistic: If you're borderline, it's smarter to do 2 days of training and go in prepared. Fail the EWT and you'll have to start over with full training.

We offer a free practical assessment to help you decide if you're EWT-ready.

What attachments will I learn to use?

Training typically covers the most common attachments:

  • Standard bucket: General loading, digging, and material movement
  • Pallet forks: Lifting palletised materials and supplies
  • Additional attachments may include sweepers, augers, or breakers depending on training centre equipment

The key skill is understanding the quick-attach system and safe changeover procedures—once you know this, you can adapt to any attachment on site.

What happens if I fail the test?

First, we'll debrief you on what went wrong—whether it's control technique, attachment handling, or safety awareness. Then we'll discuss the best way to get you retested.

This might involve more practice on differential drive, another day of training, or just booking a retest. Failing isn't the end of the world, but it's better to go in properly prepared first time.

Why does differential drive need special training?

Because it's fundamentally different from any other type of steering:

  • No steering wheel: You control left and right sides independently with joysticks or hand levers
  • Counter-rotation: Wheels on one side go forward while the other side goes backward to turn
  • Zero-radius turns: Machine can spin on the spot, creating unique spatial awareness requirements
  • Ground damage risk: Turning on the spot can tear up surfaces if done incorrectly
  • Stability changes: Weight distribution shifts dramatically during turns

The A23 proves you understand these characteristics and can operate safely.

How long is the CPCS Red Card valid?

Two years. Within that time, you need to complete your NVQ Level 2 and upgrade to a Blue Card. If you don't, your Red Card expires and you'll need to retest.

Can I get funding or finance for the course?

Funding options depend on your employment status:

  • Employers: CITB grants may be available (if levy-paying), or use Apprenticeship Levy for NVQ costs
  • Self-employed: Typically self-funded, but it's an investment in your qualification and versatility

We can discuss options when you enquire. For NVQ costs specifically, there's often more funding available—talk to us about connecting with providers.

What is the instructor-to-learner ratio?

Maximum 2:1. That means you're not sharing an instructor with a big group—you get proper supervision and plenty of time mastering differential drive controls.

What's the difference between wheeled and tracked skid steers?

Wheeled skid steers: Most common. Faster on hard surfaces, better for paved areas and yards. Can spin wheels on soft ground.

Tracked skid steers (Compact Track Loaders): Better traction on soft ground, lower ground pressure, superior on mud and slopes. Slower on hard surfaces, can damage paving.

A23 typically covers wheeled machines, but operating principles are the same. Check which type you'll encounter on site.

Why are skid steers so popular on construction sites?

Their versatility and compactness make them indispensable:

  • Fit through standard doorways and gates (around 6ft wide)
  • One machine replaces multiple tools: loader, forklift, excavator (with attachments)
  • Quick attachment changes mean rapid task switching on site
  • Low transportation cost—fit on small trailers
  • Excellent for confined urban sites and renovation work
  • Rentals are cheaper than larger loaders or excavators

This combination of size, power, and versatility explains why skid steer operators are always in demand.

Do I need a CSCS card to attend?

No, a CSCS card isn't required for CPCS training. However, if you have one, bring it—it's useful to have for general site access.

What industries employ skid steer operators?

Skid steer operators work across numerous sectors:

  • Construction: Confined space work, material handling, groundworks
  • Landscaping: Site preparation, grading, material movement
  • Demolition: Interior demo work where compact size is essential
  • Agriculture: Yard work, mucking out, feeding operations
  • Yard operations: Builders merchants, stockyards, recycling facilities

The versatility and compact size mean skid steer operators find work across almost every sector.
